Track and field is one of the oldest sports. Athletic contests were often held in conjunction with religious festivals, as with the Olympic Games of ancient Greece. At SMS, participation in track and field offers a versatile selection of competitive athletic events that involve many combinations of strength, speed and endurance. Like competition at most levels, middle school track and field events encompass sprint and long distance running races, individual and relay options, as well as jumping and throwing events.
The track and field season starts the latter part of February and runs through the end of March, into early April. Students in 6th - 8th grade are eligible to participate and are placed in A or B levels of competition.
Athletes are expected to attend all practices and athletic contests for their sport throughout the season. A student who is absent from school or considered absent is not eligible to participate in either practice or a game on the day of the absence. Students are expected to place academic commitment above athletic participation, and must maintain passing grades in all subjects to be eligible to play. Grades are checked at mid-nine weeks and at the full nine-week point. Students participating in sports are expected to represent the school with pride and grace as they compete.
A physical examination form must be completed and approved by your doctor before your child can participate in any sport activity. For more information about the St. Mary’s Track & Field program, contact Head Coach, Rick Loth, at rloth@stmarysmail.com.
